Pure Form: Circulation (2001-2002)

The sea as the source and the essence of life embraces and creates everything.
Pure Form: Circulation series was created by casting features of traces of lives on the beach using plaster and a traditional Korean paper Hanji—mediums that offer warm feelings.Subtle traces of lives on the beach left by living creatures as well as by ebb and flow of the tides through a repeated process of drawing and erasing were casted in plaster, and with its plaster mold, cast paper pieces were created. While waves, sands, and winds meet together, upon this special encounter among them, a variety of living creatures leave subtle movements on the beach every day.Along with these incessant changes, life finally reveals its own bright appearance. As it is said, “Art isn’t about making something but finding a thing, ” I realized the principle of nature that life comes after emptiness to fill it, from which symbiosis and circulation of nature, two natural phenomena, derived. This is what I hoped to share with viewers.
