A Walk through the Mind (2019-)
After my wife passed away, my daughter and I went through severe depression. In the course of trying to overcome it, I had many conversations with my daughter about our loss, and I embarked on the series A Walk through the Mind. This series is a time capsule that carries my life, life-accompanying memories, and emotions. The techniques I used in the series contribute to creating the "visual texture" of the paintings, which viewers can indirectly sense through their eyes. Further, rather than simply mixing colors alone, I blended them with my emotions.
The series doesn’t voice its opinions. The background colors, evocative of various emotions, lead the viewers to a space of contemplation. The traces of text written on canvas only give a mere clue that allows the viewers to reflect on their life-accompanying memories and a way to healing. The text written by scratching on canvas carry sadness, but when covered with the colors of hope, they create an alternative room for healing between the lines. Healing occurs during the process of writing and erasing the traces of the unspeakable aspects of life and the questions regarding them. In this way, my art leaves room for interpretation. Perhaps, while visually sensing the texture of paintings, the viewers may feel as if touching and soothing their hearts. I expect this series to allow the viewers to seek ways of overcoming their wounds, and find hope.
One painful experience may be concrete, but the life built on accumulated pain is sufficiently abstract. The series of A Walk through the Mind are stories of creaky realities, tragic or comedic lives. In my point of view, color is the source of energy and condensation of love.
